The Best Coffee Shake In My Life At Whelan’s Coffee and Ice Cream Shop!

I decided to drive 20 minutes to a new coffee shop in one of my favorite towns in Wisconsin-Oconomowoc.  Everything about this town is family friendly and entertaining.  I am nearly positive they strive to make this place entertaining each and every weekend.  My town does not do this, unfortunately.  So we are always eager to get out.

This past weekend my husband and I took the kids just to go downtown for an evening walk to check out all of the cute little shops on Main Street.  To our excitement, this weekend was full of activities-that night, there was a band playing, Totally Neon, at the beach/lakefront stage.

The band was incredible; they played hit songs from the 80s and we knew and sang along to every single one of them! If anyone I know gets engaged anytime soon, I am definitely going to refer this band to them.  I usually hate bands, but man these gals were fun (there were a couple guys too, but the lead singers were women), and they had such amazing voices.  Check them out on their Facebook page; the cover photo proves everything I just mentioned.

My precious little girls were even getting down to the music-imagine an almost 2 year old dancing. Do you know how 2 year olds dance? It is the most adorable sight in the world; they basically bop up and down and shake their little butts.  They also sometimes throw their arms in the air and shake their heads back and forth.  My little one does this a lot.  My 4 year old was doing it too.  My heart melted all night long.  It was such a fun night and I am so glad we decided to get out of the house for this little adventure.  It literally felt like we were on vacation.  Who cares if the kids didn’t get to bed until close to 10PM? They had so much fun and I have memories I won’t forget!

To continue, and to get to the main purpose of this article, on our stroll downtown, we saw a large flyer stating that there would be fireworks the following night.  So, the next night, we drove back to Oconomowoc, walked downtown again, ate some ice cream at Whelan’s Coffee and Ice Cream Shop, got some snacks, and sat down to watch the fireworks.  Before the fireworks began, there was a parade of boats in the water.  Each boat was decked out with bright lights and other neat decorations.  One boat was even playing loud music.  It was so much fun!

When we went to Whelan’s Coffee shop, we went just for ice cream because I hate drinking coffee in the evening-who wants to be up until 3AM, high on caffeine!? Before we walked through the door, we were greeted with bright, white lights that lit up the front of the shop.  There are large windows that allowed us to peak in and I could see even more bright white lights.

This excited me because white lights are so relaxing and inviting to me.  I strongly believe every single coffee shop across the world should be decorated with white lights everywhere and with lights on trees on the inside as well.  This is what Whelan’s was like when you walked in, which is another reason why I couldn’t wait to get back here.

My favorite coffee shop is one that not only has great coffee drinks, but that also has an inviting, calming atmosphere.  Whelan’s fits this description to a T!!

When you walk in, you see trees, plants, and random décor that are all lit up.

Then, when you walk through the main sitting area, there is a set of stairs that lead up to a loft area.

This is the part that grabbed and kept my attention.  There were even more white lights on trees! And, there was a fireplace in the back with comfy loveseats to read, to work, to surf the internet, and to drink your cup of coffee.  Did I mention there was also a lit up tree to the right of the fireplace and then to left, in the corner by the door?  So cute!

I immediately fell in love with this place!

While my husband was picking out ice cream for our little kids, I was checking out the coffee menu and something instantly caught my eye:  Espresso shake.

Every single coffee and ice cream shop that I have ever been to has always sold their coffee and ice cream separately, never did they merge them into one, delicious drink.

When I was a kid, my favorite treat that my dad would make for us was a bowl of vanilla ice cream topped off with freshly brewed coffee.  It was incredible.  Nothing compares to the taste of coffee and vanilla ice cream.  So, I was always in search of coffee shakes each time I went to a coffee and ice cream shop.  It was highly disappointing when I could never find one.

You now understand my pure joy at stumbling across Whelan’s Coffee shop.  I knew that I had to get back there during the day to try their espresso shake. I absolutely had to.

And that is what I did today.

I actually do, for once, have work that I have to get done (still procrastinating on it), so I thought why not work at a coffee shop? And why not try Whelan’s while I am it? Perfect time and excuse to get out of the house and work in my favorite environment while also trying my favorite childhood treat.

At Whelan’s, I ordered two drinks:  my usual Americano with half and half, and of course, the espresso shake.  Here are a couple of yummy pictures for you:

I took one sip of that shake and (not joking), I rolled my eyes (in a happy way), and grunted a little bit (couldn’t help it).  Good thing there wasn’t anyone near me at the moment.  It was everything I imagined it would be:  I tasted creamy ice cream (it was blended into the coffee, of course) AND coffee.  This drink immediately sent me back to my childhood! It was so damn good!!!!!!!!! In fact, I have never (as this post title states) tasted a better shake in my life.  I can’t wait to go home and have my husband drink it because, as picky as he is, I am 100% positive this will be a new favorite for him!

I can’t just stop here though.  This place sells a host of other scrumptious items:  yummy food, sundaes, their own homemade bread, healthy granola bars, their own coffee mugs, candy, and even health and fitness products from companies such as Advocare.

Head to Whelan’s in Oconomowoc, WI to try this amazing espresso shake! Most people don’t usually take vacations to cold Wisconsin, but maybe you could make an exception for Coffee N Convo’s favorite shake?
